Nippon Care-Fit Service Association - India
Nippon Care-Fit Service Association - India is an offshoot of Nippon Care-Fit Service Association, Japan and the brain child of Mr. Nen Hatanaka and Dr. Ryo Takahashi, who started the first overseas program of NCSA in India at Visakhapatnam, under the leadership of Mr. T.H. Manuel.

Nippon Care-Fit Service Association – India is established in the city of Visakhapatnam of Andhra Pradesh state in India, which lies on the east coast along the coast of Bay of Bengal. Visakhapatnam city is one of the 10 biggest cities of India and it is next only to the capital city of AP, Hyderabad. It is also one of the fastest growing cities of Asia.

The first meeting of the Board of Trustees consisting of like-minded philanthropists and enlightened citizens of Visakhapatnam took place on 1st October 2004 on the occasion of the International Day of the Older Persons. The office of the Trust was formally inaugurated incidentally on 2 Oct 2004, the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

The Trust is registered as a charitable trust under Indian Registration Act. The Trust is also registered under section 80 – G of Indian Income Tax Act.

The organisation has been permitted by Govt. of India under Foreign Contributions Regulation Act, to receive funds from NCSA Japan.

Activities
I. Seminars & Presentations on Gerontology
Eleven Seminars have been organised so far involving speakers from the university Departments of Economics, Sociology and Social work and Psychology. Members of the various Voluntary institutions participated in the seminars.
1. Empowerment of the Aged and the Disabled Persons
2. Exploring Employment opportunities for the Aged and the Disabled Persons - Workshop at Lebenshilfe.
3. Presentation on Barrier-free environment. Dr. Ryo Takahashi participated.
4. A Presentation on Welfare programs for the disabled persons by Mr. Prasada Rao, Asst. Director for the Welfare of the Disabled Persons .
5. Preventive care against Orthopedic disabilities by Dr. Kiran Kumar.
6. Simulation of visual disability at Government College for Women
7. Presentation on Ageing Disabilities
8. Wheel chair maneuvering at Prema Nursing School
9. Simulation of physical disability due to ageing at Govt. Krishna College
10. Nutrition for the elderly persons at Walker’s Club
11. Presentation on Barrier-free environment at YMCA

Gerontology Education in Schools & Institutions
12 sessions of Gerontology Education in high schools and 36 sessions in
Various institutions working for the welfare of the disabled and the elderly
persons are covered. KAP (Knowledge, Attitude and Practice) Test has been
used before and after the sessions to observe the effectiveness of the teaching.

Rehabilitation programs

Day Center
Twenty elderly women members are enrolled in the for the Vocational Training-cum-production program The objective of the center is to provide a meaningful occupation for the elderly persons who are otherwise left alone at home when the earning members of the family leave for work and the children leave for schools. Those elderly persons who wish to keep themselves busy, and useful by earning some money to supplement the family income are provided an opportunity for learning new trades through training-cum-production of consumer items such as Paraffin wax candles, Kitchen needs such as spices and chilly powders, pickles, fruit juices, jams, etc,; Greeting cards, business cards, invitations cards, etc; Handicrafts such as paper flowers, door mats, wall hangings, paper bags, etc. The elderly also find company of persons of their own age and status, share each others problems, seek advice of companions as well as counseling from the social workers of the center.

Celebrations of Important occasions concerning the Disabled and the Elderly Persons :
The following events are celebrated every year to entertain and encourage the elderly as well as the challenged persons by organising competitions in games and sports Cultural activities, etc. on the occasion of the

1. International Day of the elderly persons
2. Grand parents Day
3. World Disabled Day

The first Grand Parents Day was celebrated on 20 November 2004
in Visakhapatnam and cultural programs were conducted to spread the care-fit message at Ambedkar Memorial School. Similarly Grand Parents’ Day 2005 was conducted at YMCA, with lots of fun and entertainment and favourite food Day of the Persons with Disabilities was celebrated. Seminar at Pavani Institute for distribution to all the participants. Games, Sports and Singing competitions for the Visually handicapped persons at Pothinamallayapalem.. On 3 December International Day of the Disabied persons.

Distribution of clothes & Christmas Gifts
Clothes and other gifts sent as Christmas gifts by the people of Japan through
NCSA Japan are distributed to the Children of all the schools and inmates of
Institutions covered under Gerontology education during the years 2004 and 2005.

22. Distribution of clothes and books to Physically handicapped boys at the
vocational training center situated at Bakkanapalem.
23. Distribution of clothes and books and drawing materials to the Children
of YMCA shelter.
24. Distribution of NCSA gifts & Toys at Dr. Ambedkar Memorial School
(Run by Nomura Center)
25. Distribution of gifts & Toys at Lebenshilfe school for the Mentally
handicapped children.
26. Distribution of cloths and stuff dolls (Soft toys) at Pavani Institute for
Multiple handicapped & spastics at Akkayyapalem.
27. Government Children’s home (for street children) Distribution of 200 sports dresses and prizes for competition held Stationery Items to 200 inmates of Government Children’s home (for street children) at Visakha valley and participated in the Flag Hoisting ceremony on the occasion of Independence Day conducted at the school.
